From Petals to Pixels

Being an artist who works with analog mediums, I cherish the freedom to experiment—though, of course, within the constraints of my budget. It's fascinating to watch my work evolve alongside the changes in my life: time, jobs, locations, and interests all shaping my creations. Over the past three years, I’ve felt an undeniable pull toward pressed flora and fauna. My creations are delicate, and I still find immense joy in them, especially since most of my pieces have yet to leave my studio and still hang contentedly on my walls.

Recently, I’ve ventured beyond petals and leaves, blending natural elements with technology. I adore combining the fluidity of ink with the precision of digital pixels. At a small scale, a pixel is made up of several colors (RGB) that combine to form an image. In my latest works, I’ve started to deconstruct the pixel itself, exploring its intrinsic geometry and potential.

Allow me to introduce…Pixel Reflections: Blue Edition

The piece pictured here is my sixth creation in this new series, though I’ve made several iterations to perfect the technique. All previous works in this series feature organic ink flows on mirrored tiles, and it took me six tries to get the work as correct as possible. Believe it or not, one of the most difficult parts was measuring the grid.

When I create, I like to focus on reconstructing the rainbow. For this particular piece, I used Jacquard Piñata Alcohol Inks to achieve a rich cerulean dream. The vibrant color comes to life when the artwork is displayed in natural sunlight, casting beautiful square fractals on the opposite wall.

I’ve also taken precautions to ensure the pigment stays true to its original vibrancy, even when exposed to UV rays. I have yet to find any discoloration or fading over the past year of testing. In addition, I’ve found that the work takes on a mesmerizing three-dimensional effect when illuminated by a single studio light in a dark room, as if you could step right into the piece.

I’m thrilled to see how this fusion of natural and digital continues to evolve, and I can’t wait to experiment further with these pixel mirrors. I am on track to have four 16"x20" complete works by the end of this year.
